Do you ever find yourself going through an SD card deleting unsorted photos, and stumble across a series which seemed to have no promise? The composition is there, or the concept, but the lighting is wrong, or the focus is off, or you went to wide with your shot and they look ridiculous. Maybe if you crop well, or adjust the colours, they'll turn out? Yeah. This was at the tail end of one of those series. It's completely unedited - no cropping, no colour adjustment, just... from my SD card to here.

I'm so sorry it's so enormous, but I was actually looking at it full size on my screen, which only fits the head, part of the thorax and a bit of the right wing... and I was just... amazed at the colours right there. You can actually SEE the scales on the wing. The green in with the orange. This is the kind of photograph I never thought I would shoot.

I am tired but excited sorry everyone.

Good Golly! You have a really nice camera to be able to capture that kind of detailing and get it that close up! I love this.
Red Admirals are a breed more tolerable of humans, to some extents, yet, seeing how close you go to this one is still a surprise.
Looks great nevertheless, and the iridescent appearance by the sun and the wings is a great natural effect.
Is the butterfly sitting on a birch tree?

Aaah, thank you so much! It's so nice to get such a thorough comment. It's really a matter of having the right lens... to be honest, they do most of the work for me. c:

I was very lucky, my front yard was over-run with Red Admirals for two days, so I was able to spend a few hours trying and waiting for the right shot.

It was on a birch branch that we had in a flower arrangement, so kind of.

Thanks again for the comment!

^^ You're welcome; I try to be thorough or descriptive when I have the time to be...and motivation helps. ^^; Ah, yes, I guess when you at least have a camera that is able to change lenses, that makes a bit difference...the the extremely limited point-and-shoot thing we have. :/

Really? In July? Hmm, sounds similar to last March/April of last year; around where I live, for a good few days, during the abnormally warm Spring temperatures, we had dozens of Red Admirals all around the yard on the Lilacs and throughout the backyard; I loved it! I was able to get so many different photos...I just need to get them re-posted here, (since my old account had to be put-down and away) for all to see. ^^ The only sad part, was even though I finally found Nettles plants for the first time in 20+ years, in the deeper parts of the yard/forested area...though I found caterpillars, they were not Red Admirals, but Commas. However, never having found Commas before, it also was a good find as well, to go with the 80+ Question Marks I raised from eggs and Larvae. ^^

Ah, okay, I see; that works. :meow:

(By the way...I'm sorry about the profile comment. :worry:...I didn't realize at first that it was a different spriter who made the Dark Myst Pygmy...since you never replied to that comment, I can only guess I insulted you in some way, and I beg your forgiveness. :forgiveme: -_- )

Wow, I really like the lighting on this, as well as the focus. It really makes you feel like you're getting up close and personal with the butterfly.
Plus birch trees are my favorite. :)
